Dr. Rutley's Philosophy on Teaching

My goal is to enrich the classroom experience through rigor and relevance so students master concepts they can apply in the workplace now and in the future. I work to make the online classroom innovative and engaging. As a seasoned business and marketing practitioner, I integrate case studies and highlight industry trends demonstrating the application of course material.

Enthusiasm, engagement, and encouragement define my teaching style. I make time for individualized academic support offering phone or web connect opportunities, along with timely in-depth feedback as a learning opportunity. I believe that an instructor’s job is to foster an environment of trust and respect in a stimulating setting that draws curiosity around the course subject matter reinforcing critical and strategic thinking and high academic expectations.

Students often work on assignments in the evening and on weekends, and therefore I make time to be available online to respond to questions so learners can keep moving the homework forward. Near term-end, I block extra time to ensure that any missing coursework gets submitted and I stay available for final questions and support. I engage in the course room daily so students see I have an active presence.

I guide students with scholarly exploration strategies and provide real business resources as they conduct research. We learn how to read a Security Exchange Commission 10K form when studying a company. We review Business Journals, and I explain the purpose of industry Associations and Chambers of Commerce. I stress that these navigation tools help validate their paper content and this habit of research will benefit future work projects.
